Water Resources

Introduction

The evaluation of water resources available in both surface and ground water sources constitutes priceless information for the several segments of society. The essential role of water resources is mainly observed in the Northeast Region of Brazil, considering the irregular rainfall and the serious social and economic problems resulting from dry periods in the area.

The overall objective of this evaluation is to provide, based on a scientific database, suggestions for the rational use of ground water resources, according to their quantitative (hydrogeological map) and qualitative (hydrochemical map) potential. The main objective of such study is to provide the Northeast Region – nationally known for its scarcity of water resources – with a tool for the interpretation of the overall features of ground water sources.
